Definition of Vitiligo - Leukoderma - Meaning of Vitiligo

Vitiligo is also known and referred as Leukoderma. This is a disease of the skin in which the person suffering from the condition of Vitiligo attains patches of unpigmented skin which is often surrounded by extremely heavily pigmented skin on one or more locations on the body.

This is one of the most common dermatologic disorder that affects millions of people not only in any specific country or region but in fact this affects people from all over the whole world. The root cause of the condition of Vitiligo still unknown to the medical community worldwide and lots of research is still going on in order to identify the factors that affect an individual person causing the condition of depigmented patches on the skin that generally grow in size affecting more and more area on the skin of the affected person.

Leucoderma can affect any individual person at any age or stage of life starting right from the very beginning of life up to the end of life.

Scientifically this condition is caused by a certain kind of malfunctioning of the immune system of the affected person when the immune system of the affected person starts destroying the pigment producing cells inside the body of the human being which are known as melanocytes. Overall, the texture of the skin remains totally unchanged while the color of skin gets adversely affected due to contrast depigmentation and excessive pigmentation around the affected areas.
